WE have finally goten the full update on the health of all the cats. Gromit, Audubon, Denali and Raven are all in great shape. Zamboni is in great shape but need a daily anti-inflammatory and a steroid pill to keep him that way, which is fine. Angel has an age-related heart murmur (requiring no medications) and also kidney dsease (managed by diet) and is otherwise OK. So this is good news!

Green Island

We had a terrific day out on the reef. Green Island is very small - only took about 30 minutes to walk around it. The snorkeling conditions were excellent, and we saw tons of fish. There were many reef herons around the island, and the snack areas were populated by cute buff-banded rails with chicks who were amazingly friendly. All this only 1 hour from the mainland!

Visiting Cairns

Flew up with Tim to Cairns in Far North Queensland to give a talk to professional caregivers for Alzheimer's Australia (photos above are views from our hotel room). I must admit it is a pretty nice life when work commitments take you to lovely places like this! Cairns is situated where World Heritage Rainforest meets the Great Barrier Reef. After a hard day Friday of talking (me) and writing (Tim) we headed off for a Balinese feast at a local restaurant, which ensured we would sink the next day when we snorkeled Green Island.

What you get when it rains in Australia

THE FOLLOWING IS A STORY FROM A LOCAL NEWS SOURCE:

Australia is known around the world for its large and deadly creepy crawlies, but even locals have been shocked by the size of the giant venomous spiders that have invaded an Outback town in Queensland.

Scores of eastern tarantulas, which are known as “bird-eating spiders” and can grow larger than the palm of a man’s hand, have begun crawling out from gardens and venturing into public spaces in Bowen, a coastal town about 700 miles northwest of Brisbane.

Earlier this week locals spotted an Australian tarantula wandering towards a public garden in the centre of town where people often sit for lunch. They called in a pest controller, but not before using a can of insect spray to paralyse the spider.

Audy Geiszler, who runs Amalgamated Pest Control in Bowen, said that the spider was a large male with powerful long fangs and was so big that when he placed it – dead – in the palm of his hand its legs hung over his fingers.

Mr Geiszler said that he had been inundated with calls from worried locals reporting sightings of the giant tarantulas, which have been pushed out of their natural habitat over the past month by heavy, unseasonal rain.

"There have been a number of reports. It's not plague proportions but a number have been spotted around the district,” Mr Geiszler told The Times today shortly after receiving a call from a resident who had spotted another spider on the outskirts of town.

While not deadly like other Australian spiders, the eastern tarantulas are venomous and can grow up to 6cm (2.4in) long with a leg span of 16cm (6.3in). Despite their common name, they do not eat birds, but can kill a dog with one bite, and make a human very sick.

They are also known as whistling or barking spiders for the hissing noise they emit when they are disturbed or aggravated at close range.

Mr Geiszler said that they were common in the east of Australia, but usually kept out of the way and lived under mulch and logs and in natural rocky outcrops.

“I’ve warned folks around here to make sure they wear shoes and gloves when they are gardening at the moment as it can be a very nasty bite,” he said.

Asked what he would do with the giant spider he caught this week, Mr Geiszler said: “I think I’m going to mount this one in acrylic to show people how big it is. It’ll make a great paperweight.”

Trip to the Vet with the Six Cats

Took the six cats to the vet today for their vaccines, to microchip Denali and Raven, and to check on Zamboni's general progress. All cats are doing well (Angel has a bit of a heart murmur but that is probably age related). Raven is growing like a weed - she is already the second heaviest cat at 4.4 kilos (Denali is over 6 kilos).

Shopping in Rio

Today went to the Barra Shopping Mall, the largest in South America and a mere 2 miles from the hotel. Acquired an amazing dress (to be featured next time it is worn) as well as the great shoes and cute bracelet below. I walked around it for 6 hours over 2 days and saw maybe 60% of the mall...

Magical Dinner at AprazĂvel

Tonight a few colleagues and I went to the magical AprazĂvel restaurant, located high on a hilltop in the old district of Sainta Theresa. The restaurant is really a house set in lush gardens with a breath-taking view of the city. We had heart of palms, local reef fish an a lovely cinnamon baked bananas and ice cream dessert - divine!

Rio is AMAZING!

After arriving at midnight on Sunday I slept quickly sp as to be able to get to the famous Hippie Market at Ipanema, where I bought a painting of black skimmers and the earrings below. Afterwards took a tour of the Tijuca Forest, which is right in the middle of Rio and where I saw Capuchin monkeys!

As a bonus side trip, also visited the Botanical Gardens of Rio (below) which were stunning.

Off to Rio de Janeiro!

Today I flew off to my International Psychogeriatrics Conference in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The entire trip from Brisbane airport to Rio took 31 hours each way. I flew via Auckland and Santiago, Chile (above), with a short stop in Sao Paulo (below) before finally arriving in Rio (at midnight).

The airport in Santiago was very small and STUFFED with American fast food outlets. I ate a Ruby Tuesdays (craved a mushroom burger, which was not bad...). Note the guy wearing the mask walking past Dunkin' Donuts - swine flu alert was very high.

A special present for a very special person

It has been 10 years since my cousin Robert took his vows as a priest. He is a wonderful and inspiring person, so I knitted him a special scarf to commemorate his achievement.
