We had a lovely New Year's Eve BBQ with our friends Virgnia and Ted, who live in Anstead, near where we are looking for a house. They are from the States, and I made a bundt cake with Jello Devil's Food pudding, which went over very well....

A Terrific Wedding!
Today our friends Debbie Terry and Ottmar Lipp got married on their front verandah. It was a beautiful ceremony with their three kids. Before they exchanged their vows, Ottmar read a lovely poem by e.e. cummings:[somewhere i have never travelled]
somewhere i have never travelled, gladly beyond
any experience, your eyes have their silence:
in your most frail gesture are things which enclose me,
or which i cannot touch because they are too near
your slightest look easily will unclose me
though i have closed myself as fingers,
you open always petal by petal myself as Spring opens
(touching skilfully,mysteriously) her first rose
or if your wish be to close me,i and
my life will shut very beautifully, suddenly,
as when the heart of this flower imagines
the snow carefully everywhere descending;
nothing which we are to perceive in this world equals
the power of your intense fragility: whose texture
compels me with the color of its countries,
rendering death and forever with each breathing
(i do not know what it is about you that closes
and opens; only something in me understands
the voice of your eyes is deeper than all roses)
nobody, not even the rain, has such small hands
A meaningful setting
Paparazzi!
A lovely day

Zamboni goes to the hospital!
Zamboni had to go to the hospital today -- he was feeling sick, not eating and losing weight and we were not sure what was wrong. Our vet admitted him and put him on a drip. Turms out he has an upper respiratory infection, so antibiotics should do the trick. He will continue the medication for his thyroid condition for another two weeks, then they will check his progress.

More unfortunate incidents at the hotel....
This hotel in Manly was certainly nothing to write home about (except as funny blog entries...). My favorite hotel story from this trip, though, was when Annette went to iron her clothes, and pulled out the iron in her hotel room, which had a big red tag which read "THIS IRON DID NOT PASS ELECTRICAL INSPECTION." Nice...

A funny thing happened to me on the way to the hotel....
Went down to Sydney (Manyly Beach, specifically) for a neuropsychology conference with my friend Annette. It was a series of misadventures. First, the entertainment program on the plane was broken. Then, our shuttle cancelled on us, leaving us stranded in the airport. We paid for another shuttle, but this one was driven by an incompetent driver who kept going in circles. We abandoned the shuttle in the middle of Sydney and hailed a cab to drive us to Manly. When we finally arrived at the hotel, they had lost my reservation, and I had to sleep on a fold-out bed in Annette's room, which she kindly agreed to share with me. Unfortunately, she fell ill in the night and had to vomit - very unfortunate, as it turned out, as the water for the whole of the waterfront in Manly had been turned off, and she could not flush. Things could only get better....

Tim's Second Bigger, Surprise Birthday Party!
Tim was surprised to find 16 of his friends waiting to yell "Surprise" at his favorite restaurant, Royal Thai Orchid, on his birthday! There were a mixture of his friends from the MBA program, his friends from the business school and our friends from the psychology department. We had a great evening - Tim said he hadn't had a party like that since high school!

University of Tasmania
The University of Tasmania is the only university in Tasmania, and has three campuses (one in Hobart, where I was). The university is one of the four original 'sandstone' universities in Australia, and has been established for over a century. The university has about 16,000 students, and offers a full range of degrees. It is most well-known for its marine sciences and geology departments. I was there to help review the School of Psychology over two days.

Snow in Tasmania
Today flew to Hobart for a review panel meeting at the University of Tasmania. Was picked up from the airport and taken on a great tour of Hobart, the capital of Tasmania. We went up to Mount Wellington, which overlooks the city, and there was SNOW! I haven't seen snow in a long time, and promptly made a snowball (but resisted the urge to throw it at my guide...)

Tim's First (small) Birthday Dinner
We went to dinner a week early for Tim's birthday (he is 43) with our friends John & Kelly (John is a senior lecturer in the business school at UQ). We went to Tukka, which serves Native Australian Cuisine. For example, for an entree we had:
strawberry eucalypt infused north QLD crocodile, green asparagus, QLD strawberries and pepperleaf essence
For dessert we had:
milk chocolate and finger lime tart, strawberry crisps, honeydew melon and strawberry sand sorbet
We had a great evening!
