Tim and Nancy and the Cats (and our house) are Fine

Dear All-

Just a quick note to say we are all OK. We had a small tree come down on our property but it damaged nothing and we cleared it away in about 10 minutes.

The University of Queensland is closed for the rest of the week and many roads are flooded here. We cannot get to town but we have several stores nearby and have a good supply of food and nice wine!

Cats are good and we have plenty of cat food. Birds are very wet and taking shelter on our verandah but we have lots of seeds for them too!

The Brisbane River by our house is up about 16 metres (which is about 50 feet). We are VERY high in the hills over the river so there is NO chance of us being flooded (our house is over 200 feet above the river).

The rain and flooding are expected to subside possible by Friday or Saturday; certainly we are staying home and not attempting to go anywhere until Saturday at the earliest.

Will keep folks posted; be aware that most news coverage of flooding in the State is from much further north.

:)

Heavy Storms hit Queensland

This week heavy storms hit southeast Queensland, with very high winds. This caused a lot of damage especially in our old suburb of The Gap. Luckily we had no damage at our home.

Oliver Sacks

Today we went to hear neurologist and author Oliver Sacks speak downtown. It was a very interesting lecture. His most famous book (The Man Who Mistook his Wife for a Hat) is probably still my favorite.

Storms in Brisbane

Both while we were away in Hawaii and this first week we've been back, there have been a lot of storms and rain. This has been excellent both for Brisbane, which has been in drought conditions for the past few years, as well as our own garden.

Back Home in Australia!

Back home to Australia at last.... It is always great to see the headlands around Sydney from the air right before we land... And when we take off there are always good shots of the Opera House and the Harbor!

...And then it is great to see Brisbane from the air as we head in to the airport - I know I'll see Tim and the cats soon!

Roadworks

They are making the road between our house and the inner suburbs of Brisbane two lanes in each direction, which creates traffic mayhem in the morning, especially when we are trying to get to the hospital early in the mornings... Luckily most days we can leave a bit later and miss the worst of it. But it should be much better once they finish...

Sometimes it helps to pass the time to have the camera in the car, as you can get shots like the one above...

Sunday Markets at Eagle Street Pier

Today we went to the Riverside Markets at the Eagle Street Pier to hunt for cool souvenirs. Arlene got some nice soap, some jewelry, and assorted odds and ends. After a nice lunch of German sausages at the Market, we visited IKEA, which Rod and Arlene had not been to before...
